Stone Mountain, GA — Haunted Houses & Ghost Stories

The history

Netherworld Haunted House began that year, in the account on its own site, as the creation of a team of artists and craftsmen with extensive backgrounds in film and television production; some of its founders were also experienced haunted-house designers, having worked for Chambers of Terror, a local Atlanta haunt, and the national franchise Silo X.

The first full Netherworld was built in Kennesaw, Georgia, after a preview haunted house at Dragon Con — built in little more than a month, in the site's telling. When that first season ended, the attraction was packed into U-Haul trucks and scattered into warehouse floors, basements and garages until it resurfaced in 1998. Its 2026 season is its 30th, per its own site as captured in the research.

The legend

Stone Mountain's legend,, is a written one — and it is labelled, here and by its own authors, as fiction. Netherworld's original mythology, as the attraction's own history of its first year tells it, runs like this: fifty years ago, a madman named Maxmillian Colber opened a doorway to another world and looked upon "The Place Where Monsters Dwell, A Realm of Yawning Graves, The World of the Dead." His experiments unleashed lost souls thirsting for vengeance and nameless horrors hungry for the flesh of the living — and tonight, the visitor must travel to the depths of the Colber House before the door to the Netherworld opens forever.

Every clause of that is the attraction's invented backstory — storyline, not local folklore, and not history. Its significance is craft, not haunting: the founders' stated aim in 1997 was an original story and characters that could be found nowhere else, at a time when most haunts were built from disconnected scenes from popular horror movies. The Colber mythology is that aim made visible.

Netherworld Haunted House

Netherworld's own history of its first year is a business story before it is a scary one, and that is its strength. Founded in 1997 by artists and craftsmen out of film and television production — some of them veterans of Chambers of Terror in Atlanta and the national franchise Silo X — it set out, per its site, to do what most haunts of the era did not: build an original story and original characters instead of disconnected scenes from popular horror movies. A preview at Dragon Con came first; then the first full house in Kennesaw, Georgia, assembled in little more than a month; then a season successful enough that the whole thing was packed into U-Hauls and stored in a warehouse, basements and garages to wait for 1998.

The mythology it built is stated here exactly as what it is — the attraction's own fiction. In Netherworld's telling, fifty years ago a madman named Maxmillian Colber opened a doorway to "The Place Where Monsters Dwell" and unleashed lost souls and nameless horrors; the guest's job is to descend into the Colber House before the door opens forever. It is good copy, and its own site tells it with evident pride, alongside the first season's reviews: "Georgia's most intense haunted house" (Season for KiDs), "a macabre maze of monsters" (The Marietta Daily Journal), and 96 Rock naming it Atlanta's number-one haunted house. Those are period reviews quoted by the business itself, presented as such.

Three decades on, the attraction operates seasonally each fall — the research records its 2026 run as its 30th season, running mid-September into early November — physically in Stone Mountain, serving the Atlanta metro. Tickets and current dates are on its own site. Filed honestly: a landmark of the modern haunt industry, with a famous invented mythology, and no claim of a real ghost anywhere in this story.
