Cape May, New Jersey — Haunted Houses & Ghost Stories

The history

Cape May's haunted industry rests on an institution, and the institution documents itself. Cape May MAC (Museums + Arts + Culture), the nonprofit that runs the town's ghost-tour programme, states on its About page, collected, that it was founded in 1970 and has since "helped transform Cape May from a 'summer only' beach resort to the country's leading Victorian theme destination." Its own description of the resort it works in is "America's oldest seashore resort." Among the landmarks it preserves and operates, per the same page: the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate, which it restored and maintains as a Victorian house museum; the 1859 Cape May Lighthouse; and the 1942 World War II Lookout Tower (Fire Control Tower No. 23). It interprets, it says, "200 years of Cape May history and architecture through an extensive array of trolley tours, walking and historic house tours."

The building that organises the town's ghost story is that 1879 estate. MAC's Ghosts & Mysteries page gives the address and the framing in one breath: the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate at 1048 Washington St., whose daytime identity is the Physick House Museum, and whose after-dark identity MAC states flatly — the 1879 Physick House is "Cape May's very own 'haunted house'." The page's wider claim for the town is of the same kind: "Dozens of Victorian gems have been investigated and documented to have 'spirit' residents" — MAC's words, with its own assurance attached that the residents are "quite friendly." And its trolley-tour copy makes the geographic argument the whole programme trades on: "Cape May, surrounded by water with well-preserved Victorian architecture, is one of the most active ghost towns in America."

The other operators in this batch document their own, smaller claims to method. Ghost Capers, the signature experience of History Capers LLC, states on its homepage that it traced the histories of the people who lived and died at its sites "by combing through hundreds of historic documents," and "pieced together the clues to match spirits to sites and shed new light on Cape May's most famous hauntings."

The legend

This section is folklore — reported by the sources cited, and never asserted as fact here.

The Physick Estate's legend, uniquely in this batch, is told by its custodians as a recording project rather than a tale. MAC's Ghosts & Mysteries page describes its Voices from Beyond tour as "the only one to share actual recorded audio and visual phenomena of unexplained presences at the Physick House Museum," and states that "Cape May MAC staff members have nurtured relationships with the home's spirit residents for years, using paranormal research equipment to capture dozens of recordings" — electronic voice phenomena (EVPs) and photographs of ghostly presences, which the tour plays and shows to guests. The page quotes a March 2026 MyFamilyTravels account calling the property a house where resident spirits still linger and the Voices From Beyond tour the estate offering "that tends to fill up fastest," designed "for visitors who want to explore the paranormal side of the property" with "genuine substance rather than theatrical gimmicks." MAC itself asserts no named ghost for the house in the material collected — no Physick family member is claimed by name as a resident spirit on the page — and none is added here.

Around that anchor, MAC's programme retails the town's wider legend set in its own copy. Its Ghosts of Cape May Trolley Tour tells "stories of hauntings and unexplained happenings brought to light by the uniquely gifted paranormal expert and Cape May devotee, psychic medium Craig McManus," who also leads its Ghost Walk — McManus, MAC says, "has investigated Cape May for decades and sensed very specific spirit presences here, telling these stories in his five books, and in the national media," and is "the conduit for many of Cape May's most legendary ghost stories." Its Spirits & Oddities trolley tour works the Victorian-belief register: "Cats in ghostly form purr from the beyond. Beloved family members in photographs without their heads. Graves equipped with a torpedo to put off intruders" — presented by MAC as the era's notions about death, not as events. Its Haunted Tales of the Cape combo adds Victorian Spiritualism and "the objects they used to contact the spirit world." All of it is MAC's programme copy, attributed as such.

Its newer Ghosts of the Gilded Age stroll adds the Angel of the Sea Inn, the Peter Shields Inn and the site of the Christian Admiral Hotel, with tales of "missing wills, family feuds, and mysterious accidents" behind the Beach Avenue mansions. Elaine's tour, per the VisitNJ account, tells 19th-century superstitions at historic haunted mansions on an hour-long, "not-too-scary" walk — the tourism site's description, with no specific mansion or tale named in the material collected, and none invented here.

Attraction stories

Elaine's Cape May — Walking Ghost Tour

A gap first, in the open, and it is this attraction's defining fact: Elaine's own website, collected, publishes no lore and no ghost tour. The homepage the collector retrieved is a boutique-hotel page — "Your happy place," a "Cape May favorite live music landmark," twenty serene adult-only suites adjacent to its dining, bar and shop at 513 Lafayette St., Cape May, phone 1-609-884-4358 — with breakfast, live music every night, a boutique shop and fall events including a Rocky Horror Picture Show party and a pumpkin-carving contest, and not a word about ghosts. The collector's attempt on its /the-haunt path returned a thin/challenge response, treated as a gap. So the ghost tour attached to Elaine's name rests entirely on an outside account, and it is presented at exactly that strength.

Under the heading "Walking Ghost Tour," it says: "Stroll through the Victorian streets at night during the fall season from Elaine's and hear 19th-century superstitions while you visit historic haunted mansions. This not-too-scary, hour-long tour delves into the history of some of the area's most infamous houses and starts from Elaine's Haunted Mansion Restaurant." That is the whole of the sourced material: a fall-season, hour-long, deliberately not-too-scary walk, starting at Elaine's, visiting historic haunted mansions, telling 19th-century superstitions and the history of infamous houses. No mansion is named, no ghost is named, and no tale is quoted in the source collected — and none is invented here. The "Haunted Mansion" label itself appears only in that tourism account's name for the restaurant, not on Elaine's own site as collected.

What can be said from Elaine's own pages is the practical frame a visitor would actually meet: a working boutique hotel, restaurant and bar a minute from downtown and the beach, with live music nightly and a busy fall events calendar — a plausible, lively starting point for an evening walk, and a business whose current public face is hospitality rather than haunting. Whether the walking ghost tour runs in the current season, on what nights, and at what price cannot be confirmed from the business itself in the material collected; check Elaine's directly — its site takes the room and table bookings and its phone is published above — and treat the VisitNJ description as a seasonal listing to be re-verified, not a standing schedule.
