The story
Built for Nelly Custis Lewis, Martha Washington's granddaughter, this 1805 estate is known for small repeated experiences rather than one dramatic tale. A sweet floral scent near the boxwoods is credited to Nelly on a walk, and visitors upstairs describe an unseen tap on the shoulder while lights in the master bedroom switch on and off.
Visitors. Open to the public (seasonal tours, admission).
