The story
Richmond's best-known urban legend, the Richmond Vampire, ends here at the 1913 granite mausoleum of W.W. Pool. The tale grew out of the real 1925 Church Hill Tunnel collapse: a bloodied, broken-toothed figure was supposedly seen fleeing the tunnel toward the cemetery and vanishing into the tomb, though writer David Castleton notes the vampire tale and the story of fireman Benjamin Mosby, fatally scalded in the collapse, were only merged in retellings around 2001.
