The story
Carnton served as a field hospital after the 1864 Battle of Franklin, and its upstairs rooms still have bloodstained floorboards where visitors say the air feels colder. People report phantom footsteps and smells of blood and chloroform there, and a woman in 19th-century dress on the stairs and back porch who local tradition identifies as Carrie McGavock, who tended the wounded and the dead.
Visitors. Open to the public (historic site; admission charged).
Location note. Includes the adjoining McGavock Confederate Cemetery
