The story

Local lore says Susan Hower, wife of the 1871 mansion's builder, made her husband promise never to remarry, and her spirit is described as angry because he did, a few years after her death. She is said to target men in particular. A letter John Henry Hower wrote in 1900 also mentions mysterious lights his late wife saw in her bedroom, which their son later began to notice too.
