The story
The stone ruins of the Smallpox Hospital stand on Roosevelt Island in Manhattan. The 100-bed hospital opened in 1856, when the island was known as Blackwell's Island, to quarantine smallpox patients, and James Renwick Jr. designed it. It later became a maternity and charity hospital training school. Its roofless Gothic shell, with a long history of illness and isolation, makes it one of New York's most atmospheric ruins.
