The story
Hundreds died when the Brooklyn Theatre burned in 1876, and when Haverly's Theatre opened on the same lot in 1879 neighbors reported glowing lights in its windows late at night. A janitor is said to have quit after watching dead actors perform on the empty stage, and audiences reportedly stayed away until the business failed.
