The story

Built in 1844 and long sealed, this rail tunnel carries a legend that an Irish laborer shot a British contractor during construction and the crew walled his body up behind the stone. Its rediscoverer Bob Diamond told the story on his tours along with tales of river pirates stashing loot, and in 1936 police reportedly went looking for a buried body but never found a way in.

Visitors. Sealed and closed to the public; the street above is public.

Location note. Street segment only; the tunnel runs beneath Atlantic Avenue and has no single street number
