The story
The oldest story at this waterfront cottage concerns a British soldier said to have taken his own life here over a lost love during the Revolutionary War, long before the Austen family owned it. Residents have described his boots crossing the upper floor, an older neighborhood tradition adds rattling chains in the cellar, and photographer Alice Austen herself reportedly believed the soldier haunted her home.
