The story

In the 1903 Iroquois Theatre fire, 602 people died during a holiday matinee, many of them in the narrow alley behind the building while trying to escape. That alley, Couch Place, became known as Death Alley, and visitors after dark report cold spots and a heavy, oppressive feeling.

Visitors. Public alley; site now the James M. Nederlander Theatre.

Location note. Address is the former theatre site; the alley (Couch Place) runs behind it between Randolph and Lake streets
