The story

The Alton Military Prison site in Alton, Illinois, marks the state's first penitentiary, built in 1833 and closed in 1857. During the Civil War it reopened in 1862 to hold Confederate prisoners of war and closed again in 1865. The building was demolished soon after, and a section of ruined wall kept by the State of Illinois is all that remains.
