The story
College tradition says Confederate soldier John Griffen, shot in the leg at Brown's Mill in 1864, rode 35 miles to reach his sister at the school and died inside Smith Hall while it served as a hospital. A former college president wrote about strange happenings in the building, and visitors say the presence sometimes pushes or trips people.
