The story
The Madisons lived in this 1801 Federal mansion for months after the British burned the White House in 1814. Local tradition holds that Dolley Madison still hosts ghostly receptions in the front rooms amid the scent of lilacs, and staff report a young woman's figure and footsteps around the oval staircase after closing.
