The story

Naval hero Stephen Decatur was carried back to this 1818 Lafayette Square home after a fatal 1820 duel. Folklore says passersby soon saw his pained face at a second-floor window, so often that the window was supposedly walled over, and a figure carrying dueling pistols is said to slip out the back.

Visitors. Open to the public (guided tours by the White House Historical Association).
