The story
Visitors and even the building's curator have reported a woman in a black dress moving through the nursery and nearby rooms, usually identified as Manuela Girardin, who died here after nursing two sick children through the 1879 typhoid epidemic. Others hear soft coughing from an upstairs room, which local lore credits to Robert Louis Stevenson, who was in poor health during his stay.
