The story
Castle Hill's Lady in Black legend has a paper trail: Eliza Scidmore wrote in the 1880s of a woman who vanished from a wedding ball at the governor's castle and was found dead. Later retellings turned her into a Russian princess in blue or white, though Scidmore herself reported locals thought the tale was invented to keep intruders away.
