The story
Founded in 1883 and named for the Alta mining district, the club is tied to a fire said to have started when a guest fell asleep on the third floor holding a lit cigar; he was the only person who died. Visitors describe a man in 1950s clothes smoking on a couch, and a second spirit whose arrival comes with the scent of lilacs and a cold touch on the shoulder.
