The story
For nearly 150 years this campus was a retirement home for old sailors, and thousands of them died here, many buried in its own cemetery. Visitors describe brief glimpses of men in 19th-century mariners' clothes on the porticoes of the Greek Revival dormitories, while the chapel and former sanatorium have their own reports of voices and the feeling of being watched.
Visitors. Open to the public (grounds mostly free; some museums and gardens ticketed).
