The story
The 1895 marble courthouse rises on the site of one burned during the Civil War, and public hangings took place on its grounds into the twentieth century. Local ghost lore tells of unexplained sounds on the square at night, a feeling of being watched near the former gallows spot and figures glimpsed at the lower windows.
