Castillo de San Marcos
Built between 1672 and 1695 using coquina stone, Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest masonry fortress in the continental United States. Local legend tells of Colonel Garcia Martis discovering the secret affair between his wife Dolores and Captain Manuel Abela, followed by the pair’s sudden disappearance and the later discovery of two skeletons in a walled-up dungeon niche. Tour guides tell of phantom perfume lingering along the gun deck.
Huguenot Cemetery
Dedicated in 1821 outside the city gate for Protestant victims of yellow fever epidemics, this cemetery holds dozens of unmarked graves. Ghost tour folklore speaks of grave robbers disturbing the resting place of John Stickney and apparitions gliding among the live oaks and Spanish moss.
Tolomato Cemetery
Established on the site of an 18th-century Franciscan mission for Christian Guale Indians, Tolomato contains Father Pedro Camps and early Catholic settlers. Local folklore recounts the harrowing tale of a young woman nearly interred prematurely whose faint scratching was heard in time by mourners.
Spanish Military Hospital
Situated along historic Aviles Street, the Spanish Military Hospital provided medical treatment during the Second Spanish Period (1784–1821). An 1821 municipal water line excavation reportedly unearthed hundreds of human skeletal remains beneath the floorboards, attributed to an earlier indigenous settlement.
Castle Warden (Ripley’s)
Erected in 1887 as a winter residence for Standard Oil associate William G. Warden, the property later operated as the Castle Warden Hotel. On April 23, 1944, a devastating fire on the upper floors claimed the lives of two guests, inspiring decades of paranormal investigations and eyewitness accounts of mysterious figures in the tower windows.
The Old Jail
Commissioned in 1891 by Henry Flagler in Romanesque Revival style so as not to offend guests at his luxury Ponce de Leon Hotel, the Old Jail housed inmates under harsh frontier conditions until 1953. Eight executions were carried out on the compound gallows. Visitors on the after-hours Trolley of the Doomed report chilling temperature drops and phantom heavy footfalls along the iron catwalks.
