The story
Opera singer Frederick Baker, known as Federici, collapsed while descending through the stage trapdoor at the end of Faust in 1888 and died forty minutes later. Staff and patrons have since described a well-dressed man watching from the dress circle, and a seat there is traditionally left empty for him on opening nights.
