The story
Convicts built this gaol, which ran as a maximum-security prison from 1853 until 1991. Inmates said they heard girls crying at night from the East Wing, where homeless girls were held in an industrial school in the 1860s, and visitors describe swirling mists, being struck by unseen forces and sudden dread there.
Visitors. Open to the public (museum; nightly ghost tours ticketed).
