The story
This gaol held prisoners for more than 150 years, and it is often called one of the Hunter's most haunted sites. Ghost tour guests say they heard voices and felt touches from no one they could see, and the former Lieutenant Governor's residence was promoted as one of the gaol's most active areas for paranormal investigation.
Visitors. Closed to the public since 2024 (former gaol museum; reopening unresolved).
Location note. In East Maitland; closure status from NBN News, March 2026
